I can't believe that I've been in Seattle for 20 years! After leaving academic medicine at Univ. of Mich. (go blue!), I've completed a MPH from UW, worked as a cook at a retirement community, at an inpatient facility for emotionally disturbed teenage, mostly boys (who were inpatients b/c they are violent). Also was the chief cook at a residential facility for chemically dependent pregnant/parenting (and you said I couldn't be politically correct) women and their babies and toddlers. Took what Mom and I thought would be a short break in 2009 to take care of Mom, who was quite ill.
Meanwhile, I became active in my gym, and actually certified to become an instructor in TRX (strength training), still teach some cooking and nutrition to low income families. I am the lead volunteer in my local park--Seattle, in its wisdom acquires properties to turn into parks but doesn't hire more people to maintain them. I organize volunteers and wind up doing a lot of the gardening!
Bill Barrett (class of '70) and his wife were neighbors for several years; their daughter still lives nearby. Bob and Loretta Comfort also were here; need to call them to see if they are still here. My brother and his family lived 8 blocks away; they have since moved out of Seattle. Diane Hines was in touch because her grandson was relocating here--yikes, a grown up grandson.
Am trying to figure out how to effectively become more active politically. It seems as though most of what I fought for in the 70's and 80's is being destroyed. Yes, still a radical.
Went to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics meeting here last spring. Although I'm no longer a practicing geneticist (I'd be dangerous), I wanted to see what was new. People ask me questions, and I want to be able to suggest appropriate referrals. The field has really exploded in the last 25 years. Interesting about the recent uproar about donated sperm: we were aware of issues surrounding sourcing and safety 35 years ago.
If anyone is headed in this direction, I'd love to see them. My sincere apologies for not attending this reunion. Sue
