Inducted January, 2020 to the Georgia Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame. Helped coach our Carrollton High School boys track teams to 4 state team championships. While as a head coach in cross country, I coached 1 state individual champion, was Region Coach of the Year once, lobbied successfully for all of the State Cross Country Meet races to be moved to our course at Carrollton, where we have hosted State since 1994. In 1995 I was selected for the Paul Koshewa award given annually to one individual who made the greatest contribution to the sport of cross country at any level in the state of Georgia.
I volunteered at the 1996 U.S. Olympic T & F Trials and the Olympic Games, all in Atlanta, as a computer results operator.
Inducted April, 2017 to the Carrollton High School Trojans Athletic Hall of Fame as a coach, meet director, and meet announcer in Cross Country and Track & Field.
Happily married since Sept 11, 1976 to Anna, & living most of those years in Carrollton, GA - 45 miles SW of Atlanta. We both earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees there at the University of West Georgia. Our 2 married daughters live 1 hour away and 45 min away, respectively, in metro Atlanta. Carrie & Luke Dorna have a daughter, Maddy, born 2016, and a young son, Ben, born 2020. Our younger daughter, Katie, married April, 2019 to Travis Tinney.
While earning my business degree at the University of West Georgia, I walked on to compete all 4 years in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, qualifying my senior year for nationals in the 4 x 400 relay, and earned a partial scholarship for my last 3 years.
Anna & I are both retired middle school teachers, each of us with over 33 years teaching experience. We each were honored as Teacher of the Year at our respective schools.
I retired from coaching track & cross country at the end of the Spring, 2020 track season. I will continue to be meet announcer for the major invitational meets including the Georgia State Championship Meets in both Cross Country and Track & Field.
The 2020-21 season will be my 45th season of officiating basketball from high school varsity on down through recreation post season tournaments, including 18 seasons of high school state and region tournament games.
Summer 2021 will be my 7th summer coordinating a one week Christian summer day camp in Carrollton for elementary age children.
Running 12-15 miles per week, running 4-5 five kilometer races per year, and 3 yoga/pilates classes per week help try to keep up with our 2 grandchildren, officiate basketball, and announce major XC and track meets.
